Kalam Mistry made forty six boats in this season

"Where Haturi-Batal's house is, its name is Maizbari". This is how people identify the village of Sunamganj Sadar Upazila. The residents of Maizbari village have been associated with boat making for generations. One of them is Kalam Mistry. Full name is Abul Kalam. Khalil Rahman heard his story.

Most of the houses in Maizbari have 'alang'. Alang is a separate room outside the main homestead. The house where the work of making various furniture including boats goes on all day. These houses have no fences, only tin canopies. Abul Kalam was working in such a setting. Assistants Mushabbir Mia, Shah Noor and Suruj Mia were with him. The four together made various shaped boats of the Haor region including ghat boat, barki boat. Boat building works throughout the year, but during the rainy season, it really goes down. The boat they worked on on September 7 has the serial number 46 written on the front of it. That means, the 46th boat of this season is being made by Abul Kalam's team. Abul Kalam talked about hammering nails into raw wood, 'I have been in boat building for 50 years. After understanding, I see grandfather boat bandin. Later father is also doing this work. However, the busy feeling of boat building is not there.

Boats are the main source of transportation in Haor township during monsoons. Even after the improvement of transportation system, many houses still have a small boat or two moored at the wharf. The boat business started in Maizbari with this 'Ghatnauka'. However, when exactly it started, not even the teachers can tell by oath. As Abul Kalam estimated that it is close to 200 years after the continuation of the work of his father and grandfather.

There are several furniture shops in Sunamganj city. Most of these shops are owned by the people of Maizbari. The masons and workers of these institutions come from that village. Once the people of the village were more involved in wood business. Being close to the border, timber could be easily imported from India. Later they got involved in furniture and boat making. Wood, two types of iron pins, tar, jute are used to make boats. These are given by the owners of Alang. Abul Kalam started working with assistants after waking up. The work of making boats goes on throughout the day. They can make a small boat in a day with four or five people. But it takes two to three days to make a Barki boat. They get two to three and a half thousand rupees for each boat. Kalam Mistry said, "Hard work. Compared to that, the income is less. Once wood used to come through Sunamganj border, now wood has to be brought from Jessore, Bogra, Netrakona. Many left the boat building business and retained the furniture business. None of my three sons are in boat building.

Although the income was low, Abul Kalam could not leave the original profession of his parents.
